We are known for lengthy, in-depth reviews, and this particular one is no different. We have covered just bout every subject you could ever imagine with the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Click the links above to see a specific section within the review.
In this review, we discuss the new Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. And since we are covering effectively three different mattresses, here’s a graphic that explains some of the differences between the beds.
Shopping for a new mattress can be a difficult and confusing process. There are dozens and dozens of online beds to choose from not to mention all the different information and data floating around. In an attempt to make things simple, here is a quick review video that covers the most important details of Purple beds.
All of the New Purple Hybrid mattresses come with free shipping. However, unlike the Original Purple mattress, the New Purple beds do not arrive compressed and rolled up in a protective bag.
Instead, they come with free white glove delivery, meaning an actual human being (or two) will personally deliver the mattress and set it up for you. That’s good news because the New Purple mattresses are heavy and don’t have handles. All in all, it’s nice that someone else does all the heavy lifting for you. The delivery team will also haul away your old mattress if you’d like, for no additional fee.
Once the mattress is delivered, Purple offers you a 100-night risk-free trial period. Basically, if you decide the mattress isn’t for you at any point during those first 99 nights, no worries, just give the company a call and they’ll take care of it. They’ll schedule a third party to come retrieve the mattress from your house free of charge. From there, just provide proof that the mattress has indeed been picked up and the company will issue you a full refund. The whole return/refund process normally takes anywhere from 1-3 weeks.
Purple also backs the mattress with a 10-year warranty. You can get more details about what the warranty entails on the company’s website. Just for clarification purposes, most of these policies (sans free white glove delivery) are pretty standard for the online mattress industry.
Yes, let’s not forget about the flagship Purple mattress, which is what started it all for the company. The main mattress is comprised of two layers of polyurethane foam and a 2″ layer of the company’s special Hyper-Elastic Polymer (we’ll speak about this in more detail below). The flagship Purple is their most affordable model by far. Be sure to read our full Original Purple mattress review for more details. In the meantime, here’s a quick comparison video between the flagship Purple mattress and the New Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses.
In early 2018, Purple introduced three new models (the 2, 3 and 4), which is the focus of today’s review. We make sure to cover all the major items for these beds, including feel, firmness, sleeper type and more. If you’re just interested in how the three new models differ, be sure to check out our Ultimate Purple Mattress Comparison.
The New Purple mattresses land near the higher-end of the online mattress industry in terms of pricing. The Purple 2 Hybrid is the cheapest out of the three new models, followed by the Purple 3 Hybrid Premier and then you guessed it, by the Purple 4. Here’s how pricing breaks down by size for the New Purple 2 mattress.
|King / Cal King||$1,899|
The Purple 3 mattress ranges from $1,900 for a Twin XL to $2,700 for a King size. The Purple 4 Hybrid Premier mattress is an even larger step up ranging from $2,500 for a Twin XL to $3,500 for a King. Obviously, if you want one of these mattresses you need to be flush with cash. If you don’t fall into that category, be sure to check out our list of the Best Cheap Mattresses.
If you’re wondering about why there is a such a large price discrepancy between the three models, the answer lies in the top layer of each mattress. As you will find out later in this review, each mattress uses the company’s patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer for its top layer, the thickness of which varies by model. To cut to the chase, the Purple 4 mattress is the most expensive because it contains the most Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is a pricey material to source and manufacture.
Lastly, you might be asking…what about discounts? Unfortunately, Purple doesn’t offer coupon codes and promo codes all that often. Occasionally, you will see them run a $100 off sale, however, typically they’re running a promotion where they toss in a free gift (pillow, sheets, etc.) with each mattress purchase. Make sure to check the Purple website to see what sort of promotion the company is currently offering.
We make sure to bring this subject up in almost every review and comparison we publish because your weight and body type play a huge role in how you perceive a mattress to feel. No one mattress will feel the exact same to different sized individuals.
In general, heavier sleepers (250+ pounds) will feel like most mattresses are quite soft. This is because big folks exert a lot of force on a bed compared to a small or average size person. They’ll sink in and feel more of the soft top layers of the mattress.
On the flip side, lighter sleepers (150 pounds or less) will generally feel like most mattresses are quite firm. This is because the opposite is true. Petite individuals will sleep more on top of the mattress and as a result will feel less of the pressure relieving characteristics mattresses provide.
Weight affects other factors as well like temperature regulation and support, but that’s a conversation for another day. Let’s get into the New Purple mattresses (literally).
The New Purple Hybrid mattresses start with a 1″ layer of dense polyurethane foam. This layer just serves as the foundation for the main support system, which sits on top.
The system we’re referring to is a layer of 7.5″ individually encased coils. The coils serve as the true foundation for the beds. They provide the beds with ample support and a little bit of bounce. On top of the coils is a 1/2″ layer of polyurethane foam (not shown below), which simply serves as a transition layer.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. For the top layer, Purple uses a layer of their patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This polymer material is not a type of foam. Rather, it functions more like a gel or silicone-like material. As we alluded to above, the thickness of the top polymer layer differs by model. The Purple 2.0 mattress uses 2″ of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, the 3.0 mattress uses 3″ and the 4.0 model uses 4″. Essentially, the names of the models match up to the thickness of the top polymer layer.
Hyper-Elastic Polymer is very unique in that it’s stretchy, flexible and ultra-responsive, yet it’s also quite supportive. Honestly, it’s hard to put into words. With that in mind, take a look for yourself.
Purple states its special material is “soft where you want it and firm where you need it,” and all in all, we actually think that’s a pretty accurate way to describe it.
Wrapping the New Purple beds is a soft, comfortable, and removable cover. However, like most online mattress covers, it is recommended you do not machine wash it. Rather, if you happen to have a little accident (red wine, anyone?), you should just spot clean the cover with a mild detergent and some water.
If you’re a dirty person or you’re prone to accidents, you may want to think about purchasing Purple’s Mattress Protector, which is machine washable. Or you could always check out popular mattress protectors on Amazon, which tend to be more affordable. Keep in mind though that mattress protectors tend to hinder airflow.
As we sort of alluded to earlier, the New Purple mattresses have a unique, gel-like feel thanks to the top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on each bed. The beds are soft and pressure relieving, but you also feel like you’re getting the proper support at all times.
The majority of the loansonline.store team members really like the feel of Purple beds, but it’s also worth noting that not everybody shares the same sentiment. For some people, the gel-like feel is a bit too weird, or they just prefer more traditional innerspring or memory foam beds.
As you lay down on the beds, you feel the polymer beneath you compressing and conforming to your body’s shape. It takes a few nights to get used to, but in the long run we’ve noticed most people end up really liking the feel of it.
In terms of firmness, it’s hard to rate Purple beds due to the unique top layer, however, if you really pressed us, here’s where we’d say each model lands on the soft-to-firm scale. Remember, they recently changed the names from P2 to Purple Hybrid and P3 and P4 to simply Purple Hybrid Premier.
All in all, we think all three models land on the firmer side of the spectrum. Out of the three new models, the Purple.2 is the firmest. That’s because it has the thinnest top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, meaning you’ll feel more of the support coming from the coils and dense poly foam below. Likewise, the Purple.4 is the softest of the trio since it contains the thickest polymer top layer.
However, don’t let all this firmness talk scare you away if you like a soft, pressure relieving mattress. At the end of the day, all three New Purple Hybrid mattresses provide a good amount of pressure relief. That’s what makes the Hyper-Elastic Polymer material so special. It’s supportive, yet also very soft and comfortable.
In addition, the polymer material is very responsive. It snaps back to its original state immediately after releasing pressure. In fact, it can be stretched to 15x its original state, which is pretty incredible. At the end of the day, all this means is that it’s very easy for active sleepers to switch between positions. In other words, you’ll never feel like you’re “stuck in the mud” on the New Purple beds.
According to the company’s website, the Purple 3 and Purple 4 Hybrid Premier models are the most ideal for side sleepers. Again, this comes back to the thickness of the top polymer layer. Since the top layers on the Purple 3 and Purple 4 mattresses are thicker, they do a slightly better job of cradling your hips and shoulders.
However, to be fair, we think all three models will work just fine for side sleepers. loansonline.store team member Matt has spent extended periods of time on each model and believes this to be true. He’s an average sized individual that found the Purple 2 to be quite comfortable even while on his side. As such, if you’re a strict side sleeper on a somewhat tight budget, don’t feel pressured into shelling out extra money for the Purple 4 when in reality the Purple 2 will suffice just fine.
The Purple 2 mattress is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. In fact, Purple actually states the 2.0 model is their flagship bed for these types of sleepers. However, again, we think all three mattresses are good options for back and stomach sleepers. Just because the Purple 3 and Purple 4 models use more polymer doesn’t mean they bad options by any means.
Regardless of the model you choose, the individually wrapped coils combined with the Hyper-Elastic Polymer top layer result in a super supportive bed. You always feel as if the area under your lower back and trunk are being supported.
Purple likes to steer combo sleepers towards their 3.0 model, but again, we think the Purple 2 and Purple 4 will work for all types of sleepers as well. At the end of the day, all three beds strike a really nice balance between pressure relief and support.
Plus, given how responsive the polymer is and the bounce provided from the coils, combo sleepers will find it effortless to switch from their back to their stomach or vice versa.
Yes, in fact the New Purple beds may be overkill for these body types. If you fall into the petite or medium size category and you just want the gel-like feel Purple beds are known for, you can probably save yourself some money and go with the Original Purple mattress. This model doesn’t contain coils but it will still provide more than enough support for smaller sized individuals.
Absolutely. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, the New Purple mattresses are definitely viable options.
As we stated above in the construction section, this bed contains 7.5″ pocketed coils, which is something big folks will almost always want to look for. In general, coils (whether they’re part of an innerspring system or individually wrapped) are extremely durable and provide more support than dense foams a lot of online mattresses use for their foundation.
Coils provide bi-directional support, which is a fancy term that basically means the coils compress but also push back against pressure. Given this, you can start to see why beds with coils are better suited to handle all the extra stress heavier sleepers place on a mattress every night.
While I’m not sure cool is the exact right term, I can tell you that the New Purple models are among the best mattresses available in terms of temperature regulation, due to two main factors.
First, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is a temperature neutral material. It doesn’t retain heat like a lot of common foams out there. For example, a lot of beds that have a memory foam top layer retain heat emanated from your body, and hold on to it so that the bed gets warm and you get sweaty. That doesn’t happen on the Purple.2. Even if you tend to sweat while you sleep, the air flow helps to dry you off.
Speaking of, did we mention the New Purple mattresses allow for a ton of airflow? It starts with the coils, which in general promote more airflow than dense support foams. It’s just easier for air to travel through.
Additionally, the top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer is arranged in a grid formation. Purple specifically designed it like this so that several columns and rows of tiny polymer squares are created. Here, take a look:
Basically, as you can see above, you’re essentially sleeping on a bunch of tiny pockets of air. Pretty cool, right? All in all, the New Purple beds belong on the list for Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers.
The New Purple beds excel here as well. However, before we start discussing motion isolation and edge support, which are two important factors for couples, you and your partner should re-visit the feel section of this review.
Again, Purple beds have a very unique feel that can be divisive. Some people absolutely love it, and some people find it a bit too weird. Partners that have different sleeping preferences should check out our list of the Best Beds For Couples.
If feel isn’t an issue though, we have some good news for you and your sleeping partner. The mattresses actually do a pretty decent job of deadening movement.
You would think the mattresses would not do a good job of this given the bounce from the coils and the responsiveness of the top layer but as you can see above, the polymer top layer actually limits motion transfer from one side of the mattress to the other side pretty well.
This means a partner who shares a bed with an active sleeper won’t be disturbed by their movements throughout the night. No one wants to be jarred awake every time their partner switches sleeping positions or gets up to go to the bathroom. Good motion isolation translates to a better night’s sleep.
Additionally, the New Purple mattresses excel when it comes to edge support. It’s much improved over the Original Purple mattress. This is because Purple uses dense foam side rails around the perimeter of the New Purple models. There’s very little compression around the edges so you never feel as if you’re going to roll off the bed.
This is an important subject for couples who share a smaller size bed or that prefer not to cuddle. Good edge support means there’s more useful surface area for partners to spread out and be comfortable.
Overall, we really like the New Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses. The company made some nice improvements over the Original Purple bed. There’s a reason why the new models made our list for the Best Hybrid Mattresses.
If you’re tired of the traditional innerspring or memory foam mattresses out there, we highly recommend giving the New Purple models a try.
