TempurPedic is a veteran in the bedding industry, and manufactures luxury memory foam mattresses.

Here are the differences between Saatva and TempurPedic that stand out the most:

  • Price — Saatva is more affordable than most TempurPedic TEMPUR models.
  • Feel — Traditional innerspring feel with Saatva vs memory foam feel with TempurPedic.
  • Construction — Saatva is an innerspring mattress while TempurPedic has all-foam and hybrid choices.
  • Cover — Saatva has an organic cotton cover and TempurPedic comes with a cooling cover.

The video above is clearly not a direct comparison of TempurPedic and Saatva, but hopefully it gives you a good idea of some of the other beds that they compete with. Continue along to discover which mattress you’re drawn to most.

A Little Background On Saatva And TempurPedic

Saatva has released a few other mattresses including Zenhaven and Loom & Leaf, but this comparison revolves around their flagship innerspring bed named Saatva. They weren’t the first to start an online mattress company, but they were pretty quick to get in on the fast growing movement.

The other star of this post is none other than TempurPedic, a brand who’s been around the block a few times after 22 years of business. They have a line of mattresses called TEMPUR, and we’ll be putting the memory foam beds head-to-head against Saatva. Which one will you want to drift away on every night? Find out below.

Saatva

BEST FOR:

  • Those who want a bouncy, innerspring feel
  • Any body types
  • People who need an extra supportive bed (dual coil layers)
  • Back, stomach, side, and combo sleepers
  • Folks who don’t want to deal with the set-up process (White Glove Delivery)

Construction And Materials For Saatva

Saatva operates a little differently than other online mattresses because you can choose between a 11.5″ thick custom slim model and a 14.5″ thick premier luxury model. They do however, have a very similar construction and feel.

The first layer of the Saatva mattress is a series of thick steel innersprings. They act as the bed’s supportive foundation, and help to prevent sagging. Next comes an additional layer of coils, but they’re pocketed coils which are individually wrapped to provide localized support. As you could imagine, it’s pretty bouncy too.

To provide you with pressure relief and soften up the mattress a bit, they added a thin layer of memory foam on top of the coils. Then the last slab of material in Saatva is a Euro pillow top, which adds another layer of comfort and plushness. You can also find dense foam stuffed around the perimeter of the bed to enhance edge support, so couples don’t feel like they’re about to go rolling off the side in the middle of the night if they’re pushed to the edge.

Finally, the entire bed is encased in a soft, off-white, organic cotton cover. We think it gives the mattress a really luxurious look, and it’s a premium mattress you might see in an expensive hotel when you’re on a nice vacation.

Overview Of Feel And Firmness

Considering there are two layers of coils in Saatva, it kind of reminds us of a mattress that you might see in a luxury hotel or resort. It’s incredibly supportive, and bouncy enough to give you serious air during a bed jumping session. But it’s softer than other innerspring mattresses you’re probably used to, due to the top memory foam layer and Euro pillow top.

There are a few firmness levels your Saatva mattress can come in. Here is how we rated their three different options on our firmness scale:

  • Plush Soft: Closer to a medium on our scale.
  • Luxury Firm: Just about a medium-firm on our firmness scale.
  • Firm: This is a properly firm bed.

We think back and stomach sleepers should gravitate towards the Luxury Firm or even Firm model, because they should look for a mattress that’ll keep their spine in proper alignment throughout the whole night. On the flip side of the coin, side sleepers should probably consider the Plush Soft model so they feel enough pressure relief, and don’t wake up feeling pins and needles in their arm.

Combo sleepers should consider their most dominant sleeping position, and cater more to that. As a rule of thumb, though, beds that land around a medium firmness level are great at accommodating a wide range of sleeper types. We actually think Saatva might be a little better for combo sleepers, because it’s much easier to switch positions on than it is on memory foam.

Saatva Is More Affordable

Mattresses fall into one of three categories: budget tier, average, or luxury tier. We think Saatva is around the average price of other online mattresses, while the TempurPedic mattress leans more towards luxury. With that being said, we think Saatva has a great value for what you’re getting. We even added it to our post on the best value mattresses for the money.

A queen size Saatva mattress retails for $1,100 and the least expensive mattress in the TEMPUR line is about $2,200. We’ve also noticed that Saatva is usually more generous when it comes to giving discounts. And considering we think Saatva is a quality premium mattress, we’d probably say you’re getting a better value with Saatva. But TempurPedic is definitely still a great mattress, we just know their price point isn’t accessible to everyone.

An Overview Of TempurPedic’s Mattress Models

TempurPedic is a huge bedding brand, and probably the most recognizable name among memory foam mattresses. They have several beds to choose from, and we don’t want to dive right into an explanation of their different constructions before giving you a little debriefing. You can see all of the models on TempurPedic’s website.

  • Adapt: This is the most affordable TempurPedic mattress in the series. It’s available in an all-foam model, and a hybrid model.
  • ProAdapt: TempurPedic says the ProAdapt TempurPedic mattress is the most popular, and you can also purchase a hybrid model if you choose to.
  • LuxeAdapt: They call this their “most advanced” model, but even then, we aren’t sure if we can justify the price.
  • ProBreeze: This is a cooler mattress, meant to sleep 3 degrees cooler than other memory foam beds.
  • Luxe Breeze: Similar to the previous model, but it’s supposed to sleep 8 degrees cooler than other memory foam mattresses. It’s also the most expensive bed in their lineup.

Construction Of TempurPedic Beds

The construction of the different TempurPedic models aren’t wildly different, so we aren’t going to take our time discussing each one, or else you’d probably be bored out of your mind. First, we’ll discuss the “Adapt” models, then we’ll get into the added details about the “Breeze” ones.

We’re going to focus the construction discussion on the ProAdapt model, because it’s very similar to the other two. The only major differences between the three “Adapt” models are the kind of base used (coil or foam), foam density, and thickness.

The first layer of the ProAdapt mattress is dense neutral foam (or coils) to provide a foundation for the rest of your mattress. The next slab of material is called the transition layer, because it’s meant to provide a cushion between the harsher foam on the bottom, and softer layers above it. Lastly, the bed is topped with two layers of memory foam, either dubbed “TEMPUR-APR Support” and “TEMPUR-ES Comfort Layer,” but all you need to remember is that it’s basically traditional memory foam.

The construction of TEMPUR-ProAdapt

The cover is made with a special phase-change material, which is supposed to help regulate temperature. Memory foam beds are known to get a little warm, which is a major reason why TempurPedic introduced the Tempur-Breeze and Tempur-LuxeBreeze.

The Tempur-Breeze has a similar construction to the ProAdapt model, except it comes with a softer cooling cover, has a laminated gel strip under the cover called “PureCool+ Phase Change Material,” and a layer of gel-infused foam called “TEMPUR-CM+ Comfort Foam” underneath that gel strip. Like we mentioned, it’s supposed to sleep 3 degrees cooler.

The Tempur-LuxeBreeze is basically the same as the Tempur-Breeze, but they say it sleeps 5 degrees cooler. We can’t really confirm or deny if it actually slept that much cooler, but you can definitely tell these mattresses are actively trying to cool you down.

Feel And Firmness Of TempurPedic

As you can probably already guess, TempurPedic mattresses have a true, viscous memory foam feel. It’s kind of their thing. As your body heat warms the foam up, you slowly become nestled inside a little cocoon made from your body imprint.

Instead of going through each and every firmness possibility for all six mattress models, here is a helpful graphic that will explain it in a way more organized fashion.

tempurpedic mattress reviews memory foam mattress lineup firmness

So we think most people will be able to find a mattress that would suit them best, but combination sleepers should be a little wary of a TempurPedic. If you already like the feel of memory foam, we don’t think it’ll bother you too much.

But if you aren’t used to the feeling, it can be somewhat difficult and a little annoying for some people to switch positions on because memory foam is so slow to respond to pressure.

How Weight Affects The Feel Of A Mattress

Whether you’re petite, medium, or heavy set, you should consider your weight before you commit to buying an expensive mattress. The last thing you want is to spend money on a mattress that makes you wake up with an aching back, or one you can barely get to sleep on because it’s way too firm.

If you’re petite, you should generally look for softer mattresses because you don’t enforce a lot of pressure onto a bed. Mattresses will feel firmer to petite folks than it does for somebody with a medium build. If you’re 250+ lbs, then you should do the opposite, and look into buying a firmer mattress that will be supportive enough.

We also suggest heavier folks consider hybrid mattresses, because beds that contain coils will be more supportive and durable than all-foam mattresses.

In this case, both Saatva and TempurPedic have perfectly acceptable beds. But if you want to know a few of our other picks, head over to our post on the best mattresses for heavy people.

Verdict

You have a taste for the finer things in life, and that’s commendable. We think both Saatva and TempurPedic have a premium look and feel you’ll consider up to par. But which one will you like most? Ask yourself these questions to get yourself closer to a decision.

  • Are you a price conscious buyer? Saatva is more affordable than TempurPedic.
  • Do you love memory foam? TempurPedic has a traditional memory foam feel.
  • Do you toss and turn in the night? You might struggle on a TempurPedic, so we suggest you look into Saatva.
  • Are you a hot sleeper? TempurPedic mattresses come with cooling technology.
  • Do you want someone to set up your mattress for you? Saatva offers free White Glove Delivery.

A Look At Saatva And TempurPedic Company Policies

Now that we’ve discussed all the main reasons why you might buy one of these mattresses over the other, we’re going to review important policy information you should be aware of. When you purchase a TempurPedic mattress online, they’ll give you a pretty standard 90-night trial period, a 10 year warranty policy, free shipping, and free returns (minus shipping charges, which are typically $100-$200).

Saatva, on the other hand, will give you free White Glove Delivery, which means a professional will set up your mattress for you when they deliver it. In addition, you’ll receive a 120-night trial, and a 15-year warranty policy. They also offer a service they call “Fairness Replacement Option,” which we haven’t seen very often. Instead of sending them your mattress to be fixed, the policy allows you to purchase a new bed at 30-70% of what you paid for it. Our only caveat is that you’ll have to pay a $99 fee if you want to return your mattress, but it’s understandable since there are extra costs that come with White Glove Delivery.

Luckily, you won’t have to wait for your Saatva or TempurPedic mattress to decompress, since they’ll both arrive at your home in their normal state.
