Layla is one of the more unique mattresses on the market because it’s flippable, so you’re able to switch between two firmness levels. It also has a soft and fluffy memory foam feel thanks to the use of copper-infused memory foam.

Here are the main differences you’ll want to take away from this post:

  • Feel — Soft foam blend vs soft memory foam.
  • Firmness — Puffy comes in medium, while Layla comes in two different firmness levels (the mattress is flippable).
  • Price — Puffy has a higher retail price but after discounts they’re pretty similar, and there is no clear winner.
  • Cover — Puffy has a removable and machine washable cover, while Layla has a super-soft, two-tone cover.
  • Lifetime warranty — Both brands offer a lifetime warranty!

Now let’s jump into the comparison so you can get one step closer to finding a great mattress.

Puffy Vs Layla: Intro

Puffy recently came into the online mattress space, but it didn’t take long for them to make a big name for themselves. You might’ve seen an ad for Puffy on Facebook, Instagram, or even an afternoon talk show you’ve possibly heard of before, The Ellen Show. We’re kidding, of course you’ve heard of it. About a year ago, Ellen featured Puffy on her show during a short segment about the mattress, and they’ve now grown to be one of the most popular brands on the market.

Layla is also a crowd pleaser among bed-in-a-box customers. The fact that it’s flippable makes the Layla mattress versatile, accommodating, and a good mattress for couples. It also makes it so Layla sticks out from the crowd, since there aren’t many other brands out there who have manufactured a bed that has two firmness levels simultaneously.

Puffy

BEST FOR:

  • Folks who want a bed with a soft foam feel
  • All sleeper types (back, stomach, side, combo)
  • Those who want to keep their mattress extra clean (machine washable cover)
  • Petite to medium sized individuals

Materials Inside Puffy

We’ll be focused on the original Puffy mattress in this comparison, but we also want to mention their Puffy Lux model. It’s slightly thicker and more expensive, but it’s better for those who want a soft mattress that’s made primarily for side sleepers.

A Puffy mattress is 10” thick, and constructed with three layers of different foam materials. The first slab takes up most of the mattress because it’s 6” thick, and it’s meant to provide a sturdy foundation for your bed. You’ll see something similar on Layla, and many other mattresses.

The next layer is 2” of Puffy’s proprietary “Climate Comfort Foam.” Proprietary foam is just a type of material made by a brand, for a brand. In this case, it acts as the transition layer between the dense support foam below, and the comfort foam on top.

The layers that make up a Puffy mattress

Puffy’s top layer, which contributes to most of the bed’s comfort, is called “Cooling Cloud Foam.” It’s another proprietary foam, but it’s made from gel infused visco polyurethane foam using Puffy’s Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) process. We know we’re throwing a lot of mattress jargon at you, so in simple terms, it was made in an environmentally friendly manner in a closed chamber.

At a high level, Puffy has a similar construction to the Lull mattress in that it’s three layers and the top layer is a gel memory foam. Even so, the beds feel different, just like Layla feels different. Read on for more details.

Puffy’s Special Cover

A few things we love about Puffy’s mattress cover (besides the cute clouds stitched on the outside), is how it’s removable, machine washable, and supposedly stain resistant. Other brands claim you can remove their mattress cover, but we don’t see a purpose in taking it off if you can’t wash it.

Puffy’s soft stain resistant and machine washable cover

There are a few companies who manufacture their beds with machine washable covers, like Helix and Yogabed, but it’s pretty uncommon. Yogabed coined the term “zip-n-wash” to describe the process, because it’s so effortless and quick.

We almost never see a brand who offers a “stain resistant” cover though, and we think it’s a great option for kids, teens, or couples who like to treat themselves to breakfast in bed.

Feel And Responsiveness Of Puffy

In early 2019, Puffy updated their mattress which changed the construction and the overall feel of their bed. We just mentioned Puffy’s top “Cooling Cloud Foam” layer, and they used to use 4” of it at the top of their mattress, which gave it a memory foam feel. In the update, they broke it up into a 2” slab of transition foam and 2” of the cloud foam.

An overhead look at Puffy

Now, we think it feels more like a soft foam blend. The top layer mimics some characteristics of memory foam, but it feels much lighter than your typical dense memory foam does. If you’re somebody who has no particular feeling towards memory foam, or if you don’t necessarily know what you want, we think Puffy is a safe pick.

On our scale from soft to firm, we rated Puffy a medium. It’s not too firm, so side sleepers will get pressure relief, and it’s not too soft for back or stomach sleepers. And if you think about it, it makes sense for Puffy to create a bed that’s a medium on our firmness scale—they want to please as many people as possible.

puffy mattress review firmness and feelWe also think it’s a good choice for combination sleepers, because our team found it was pretty responsive and easy to switch from one position to the other. In other words, unlike a bed such as Zinus, you can freely roll between your preferred sleeping positions.

Price Difference Between Puffy And Layla

In this case, we don’t think the price difference between Puffy and Layla will be a huge factor in your decision. We say that because Puffy’s retail price is slightly higher, but after discounts (which Puffy and Layla are pretty generous with), they come out to be about the same price.

Puffy retails for around $1,150 and Layla has an MSRP around $1,000. Once you take their promotions into consideration, Layla usually drops their price about $100-$125, and Puffy is known to bring their price down by $250-$300. As such, the small price difference probably isn’t enough to make you pass on the mattress you really want.

To stay current on their promotions, you can head to the Puffy website and Layla website, or check out our mattress coupons page where we display discounts from many different brands.

Construction And Materials Of A Layla Mattress

You’re familiar with double sided paper and double sided tape, but there’s probably a good chance you’ve never been introduced to a double sided mattress. There are over 100 bed-in-a-box mattress brands on the market, but there are only a few flippable ones out there.

The two I can think of off the top of my head, other than Layla, are the Plank mattress from Brooklyn Bedding, and the Nest Bedding Flip mattress. A flippable mattress means you have the ability to turn the bed over to the other side, and get a whole new sleeping experience with a different firmness level.

A look at Layla

Like Puffy, Layla is also 10”, but it’s constructed with four layers instead of three. The bulk of the mattress is a 4.5” slab of dense polyurethane (neutral) foam for support, and underneath that is 1” of copper-infused memory foam. This makes up the firm side of a Layla mattress, since there’s a very thin layer of material between you and the dense support layer.

On top of the 4.5” of support foam, is a 2” layer of convoluted neutral foam. It looks similar to egg crate foam, and it’s meant to act as a transition layer between the support foam underneath, and comfortable foam above it.

Finally, the layer on top of the transition layer is 3” of copper-infused memory foam. It’s a proprietary foam meant to sleep a little cooler than traditional memory foam, since the copper has temperature regulating properties. As you could probably guess, this makes up the softer side of a Layla mattress.

Another unproven but fun benefit of copper is its health and wellness benefits. In Ancient Egypt, citizens would wear copper in their garments because they believed it released positive ions. Maybe it works, or maybe it’s just a myth. Either way, we appreciate the thought.

Since Layla and Puffy are all foam mattresses, we recommend them more for petite to medium sized individuals. We usually suggest folks 250+ lbs look into hybrid mattresses (beds with both foam and coils) because they are generally accepted to be more durable, supportive, and long-lasting. With that said, check out our post on the best beds for heavy people.

Feel And Firmness Of Layla

When you look at a Layla mattress, you’ll notice it’s two different colors. This is how you’ll know if you’re sleeping on the soft or firm side, without looking at the tags.

Layla labels the soft side and the firm side

As you can tell by the photo, the grey side is soft and the black side is more firm. Regardless of which side you’re on, however, you’ll get a memory foam feel (soft memory foam on the softer side). We think it feels light and airy, but it still nestles to the curves of your body like memory foam is known to do.

We want to note that you won’t get that deep viscous feel on Layla, so folks who don’t usually like memory foam might be a little more open to this mattress.

On our scale from soft to firm, we rated their Soft model a medium-soft and their Firm model in between medium and medium-firm.

That means all sleeper types will be accommodated on Layla. Especially since you’re one mattress flip away from a different firmness level.

The firm side is more responsive to pressure than the soft, so if you’re a heavy combo sleeper, you may want to stick with the firm side because it’ll be easier for you to switch positions at night. If you’re a petite to medium sized combo sleeper, you won’t sink into the mattress as much, so you shouldn’t have an issue switching positions.

Consideration For Couples

If you sleep with a loved one, it’s important to purchase a mattress that both individuals will agree upon. Couples want a mattress that limits motion transfer, and has decent edge support. Both Puffy and Layla get satisfactory marks in these areas. You’ll also want to look for a comfortable but accommodating mattress that’ll suit both sleeper types.

In a perfect world, you and your partner will have the same sleeper types, and it’ll be no problem picking out a firmness level to fit. In reality, many couples sleep in different positions than their significant other. So what do you do? You either find a mattress that sits right in the middle between soft and firm like Puffy, or you can find a mattress like Layla that comes with two firmness levels.

You can switch firmness levels as you please, especially if your partner is temporarily away, like on a business trip for example.

We also think Layla is a great option for pregnant women. They can sleep on the soft side during those nine months for much-needed pressure relief, then switch back to the firm side if that’s what they prefer.

Our Verdict

Puffy and Layla are two great choices for people looking for an affordable, but accommodating bed-in-a-box mattress. If you got a little lost in all this information and you still can’t decide which mattress to go with, take these points into consideration.

  • Do you want a mattress with a more prominent memory foam feel? We think you should take a look at Layla.
  • Do you want a bed with a machine washable cover? Puffy has a machine washable, and stain resistant cover.
  • Would you like your mattress to come with two firmness levels? Layla is flippable, and you can switch between medium-soft or medium/medium-firm.
  • Would you rather purchase a product endorsed by a celebrity? Ellen backs Puffy, and even featured them on the Ellen Show.

Diving Into Puffy And Layla’s Company Policies

When you purchase a bed-in-a-box, there are a few standard policies that most brands seem to follow. First, you’ll get free shipping and free returns (unless you’re purchasing from a luxury brand like TempurPedic who charges a return fee). Your mattress should show up within 3-7 business days, and as the name implies, it’ll arrive encased inside a box.

The next perk you can expect is a free trial period, and warranty coverage. The average trial period seems to be around 100 nights, and the average warranty period is about 10 years.

When you purchase a Puffy mattress, you’ll get a 101-night risk-free trial, and with Layla you’ll get 120 nights. As you can see, Layla’s policy is a little longer than average. Either way, though, you’ll get plenty of time to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your new bed.

Now when it comes to their warranty, Puffy and Layla give their customers a lifetime of coverage. Yep, you read that right. They’ll cover you for your entire life, as long as you don’t neglect or give away your mattress. Obviously we recommend you don’t sleep on the same mattress for decades, but it’s nice to know they stand by their product wholeheartedly.
