Casper is one of the godfathers of the bed-in-a-box industry. Their flagship mattress is a 12" all-foam bed that has more of a neutral, soft foam feel.

  • Price — Nectar is more affordable, plain and simple. Plus, the company often throws in two free pillows with each purchase.
  • Feel — The Casper mattress has a soft neutral-foam feel. The Nectar mattress has a dense memory foam feel. if you like memory foam, go Nectar. If not, Casper is the clear choice.

The Nectar mattress is 11″ thick and comprised of four layers of foam. In short, it has a thick layer of polyfoam on the bottom and three layers of memory foam on top. As you might imagine given the construction, this bed has a memory foam feel.

About The Firmness & Feel Of Nectar

However, it’s not your typical soft memory foam feel. It actually has more of a firm, dense memory foam feel. When you first lay down on the bed, it feels extra firm, but after a few seconds, you slowly sink in a little bit and the top layers start to conform to your body.

Still, it’s on the firmer side. We think it comes in right around a medium to medium-firm on the firmness scale. The bed provides a good amount of support, yet you still get a little bit of pressure relief that memory foam is known for.

Overall, we think the bed is ideal for all kinds of sleepers. As I alluded to before, it strikes a nice balance between pressure relief and support. When you’re on your back or stomach, your trunk and lower back always feel supported. When you’re on your side, the top layers do a decent job of cradling your hips and shoulders. Plus, keep in mind, all beds soften, so over time you’ll start to notice the bed becomes even more accommodating for side sleepers.

Hopefully you like memory foam because Nectar has plenty of it

However, you will get a bit of that stuck-in-the-mud sensation that memory foam is known for. That means combo sleepers who tend to switch positions a lot might find it requires a little extra effort to switch from their back to their stomach or vice versa.

Further, given it is an all-foam bed that’s on the thinner side, we don’t see this mattress as being the most ideal option for heavier individuals (250+ lb). We typically steer big folks towards hybrid or innerspring mattresses, which contain coils. As of early 2019, Casper released two hybrid mattresses called Casper Hybrid and Wave Hybrid so we recommend heavy set individuals check them out. You can see the new Casper beds on

In terms of temperature regulation, we’d rate this bed as temperature neutral. We don’t think you’ll heat up at night, nor will the bed actively cool you down. Rather, the temperature at which you sleep on this bed is probably going to be more dependent on external factors (i.e. living in a hot climate, running the AC, using flannel sheets, etc.).

Discussion About Couples

Lastly, let’s talk about couples. We do think the Nectar mattress is a viable option for people who share a bed. It has pretty good edge support for an all-foam mattress. You never feel as if you’re going to fall off the bed as you approach the edge. That’s important when your partner decides to hog the middle of the bed, leaving you stranded near the perimeter.

The Nectar mattress also deadens movement very well. That’s not a big surprise, though, considering memory foam is known for doing just that. So if your partner has a habit of moving around a lot or getting up for a midnight snack, don’t worry, you won’t be disturbed.

Overall, we are big fans of the Nectar mattress. We can see why the company has done so well. Bottom line, if you like the feel of memory foam, chances are you’ll like this bed. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the mattress is priced affordably and the company usually tosses in two free pillows with each mattress purchase.

Casper actually offers five different beds (the Essential, the Original, the Wave, Casper Hybrid, and Wave Hybrid). In today’s post, we’ll be focusing on their flagship bed, the Original Casper mattress, since it’s most similar to Nectar in terms of construction and pricing.

About Casper’s Flagship 12″ Mattress

The Original Casper is a 12″ all-foam bed that is comprised of four layers. It starts with a dense layer of support foam on the bottom. Next is what Casper calls its Zoned Support Foam. This layer was actually added to the Casper mattress in early 2018. In short, it’s a foam layer that is split into thirds. The top and bottom thirds are slightly softer (where you need more pressure relief) and the middle third is a bit firmer (where you need more support).

Next is a layer of memory foam and then there’s a layer of proprietary open-cell foam on top. The open-cell foam on top gives the bed more of a soft neutral-foam feel. You don’t really feel much of that memory foam in the second layer at all.

Keep in mind, if you spring for the Casper Hybrid or Wave Hybrid, these mattresses also have coils constructed on the inside.

Overall, it’s a very comfortable mattress. It’s one of those beds where you can’t help but let out an “oh, yeah, that’s nice” as you lay down on the bed. It just has a really nice balance between comfort and support.

In terms of firmness, we think it lands smack dab in the middle of the fairway at around a medium. Like Nectar, we think it’s ideal for all kinds of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on your back, stomach, or side. Again, like Nectar, though, it’s probably just not the best option for heavier folks due to the construction of the bed.

As far as coolness, we think the Casper bed sleeps neutral. Again, you won’t wake up drenched in your own sweat, but you also won’t sleep chilly.

Lastly, like Nectar, the Casper mattress is a solid option for couples. It has pretty decent edge support and limits motion transfer well. As such, you won’t need to worry if your partner is an active sleeper or likes to keep you near the perimeter of the bed.

Overall, not to sound like a broken record, but we really like the Casper mattress, as well. It’s comfortable, accommodates all sleeper types, and performs well in almost all categories.

Casper Mattress vs Nectar Review Verdict

If you’ve made it this far, you might be a little frustrated since Nectar and Casper actually do share a lot of similarities. They original models are both all-foam beds that accommodate all sleeper types, sleep temperature neutral, and provide solid edge support and motion isolation. To make your decision easier, ask yourself two questions.

First, what’s your budget? If you’re looking to spend under $800 (queen size), it’s an easy decision, go Nectar.

If price is not a concern, it really comes down to feel. Would you rather have a memory foam type feel or more of a neutral, soft foam feel? If you want memory foam, go Nectar. If you want a neutral feel, go Casper.

Shipping, Returns, Trial Periods, And Warranties

Part of the reason why bed-in-a-box companies have achieved so much success in recent years is because they make it extremely easy for consumers to test out their beds. You no longer have to spend hours in your local mattress store being hassled by annoying salesmen.

Casper will ship their mattress compressed and rolled-up in a box directly to your home for free. After it arrives and you get it all set up, the company then gives you a 100-night trial period to test out the bed. If, for any reason, you decide you don’t want the bed during that time period, no problem, just contact Casper and they will arrange for it be picked up free of charge and they’ll issue you a full refund (pretty easy, right?). Casper also backs their mattress with a 10-year warranty.

Now, all those policies I just mentioned for Casper hold true for most bed-in-a-box companies. That’s the industry standard. However, Nectar takes it a step further in almost every regard.

They too offer free shipping. The Nectar mattress will arrive compressed and rolled-up in a protective sleeve. From there, though, the company gives you a 365-night risk-free trial period. Yes, they give you a full year to test out the bed. If you decide Nectar isn’t for you, the return process works just like I explained previously.

Nectar also backs their mattress with what they call their “Forever Warranty.” Basically, in years 1-10, the company will replace the mattress no questions asked if defects in workmanship or materials are discovered. In years 10+, the company will either repair or replace the mattress (transportation costs are covered) if manufacturing defects or material failures are found.

However, I should mention that we have heard some complaints about Nectar mattresses taking a long time to arrive. It didn’t happen to us, but if you do order a Nectar, don’t expect it to arrive the next day. It will most likely take one or two weeks to show up on your porch.
