Layla vs Purple: About These Beds

When you’re having a conversation with a friend and they mention that they recently purchased a new mattress, your brain likely won’t be envisioning a mattress like these. Purple and Layla are two brands that we’d describe as “nontraditional” because they don’t follow the precedent that coil and foam mattresses have been setting for so long. While Layla contains foam, and coils can be found in the newer Purple models, these materials definitely aren’t the centerpiece to their uniqueness.

Not only does Layla have a lighter memory foam than other memory foam mattresses, but it’s also flippable. And we aren’t talking about the ability to turn your mattress over when you get a bad stain on one side. The Layla mattress features a grey Soft side and a black Firm side, making it one of the more flexible beds on the market.

Instead of using foam, the founders of Purple went ahead and made their own material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer. It’s patented so no other mattress brand has it. It’s probably like nothing you’ve ever laid on before, which could be a good or bad thing depending on who you’re talking to. It takes a second to get used to, but we’ve heard from a lot of people who say they like it (including many of us here at the office). Like we said before, it all depends on your preferences so keep reading to determine which mattress might be more appealing to you.

Price Difference Between Layla And Purple

If you’re looking for a mattress with a lower price tag, but don’t want to sacrifice quality, a Layla might be the better choice between the two. The Original Purple queen size mattress retails at about the same price that a Layla does, which is around $1,000, but they don’t generally provide customers with any mattress coupons codes.

Layla often offers discount codes that can drop your total price by around $100 or more. If you start looking at the New Purple models, they range from about $1,600-$2,800 for a queen bed, so the price difference is even greater. You can credit the higher price tag to their construction because they’re made with a blend of coils and Purple’s additional layers of Hyper-Elastic Polymer. While Purple isn’t big on promoting coupon codes, occasionally the company will run specials, bundles, and sales.

Layla Construction And Materials Used

Layla’s most dominant feature is its flippable design, and it’s the primary characteristic that sets Layla apart from other mattresses.

The grey side is softer and lands at a medium-soft on our scale, and the black side is placed between medium and medium-firm. A Layla mattress will allow you to switch from a softer mattress to a firmer one in about fifteen seconds, so we name it the more flexible option in this comparison.

When it comes to the inside of a Layla mattress, the focal point is definitely memory foam. It’s actually infused with copper, which is one of the most conductive metals found on the planet. What does this mean for you? If you’re a hot sleeper, the copper inside the foam will attract your body heat and pull it away from you. With all things considered, it’s still memory foam so it’s not the coolest bed on the market. It’ll certainly help to regulate temperature better than a regular memory foam mattress would, though.

It’s also hygienic and helps fight microorganisms that are trying to share the mattress with you. If you want to learn a little more about the construction of a Layla mattress, you can find an in-depth explanation in our full review of Layla by following the “See Full Review” link.

Layla Mattress Feel

When you press your hand down on either side of a Layla mattress, you’ll notice that the bed doesn’t immediately snap back into shape. While the material may be quicker to bounce back than other memory foam mattresses because it’s very light and airy, you’ll still feel yourself nestling into the foam when you lay down. If you’re seeking a unique mattress that still has a soft memory foam feel, a Layla mattress could be right for you.

Since the mattress is double sided, it can be accommodating for all sleeper types. The Soft side is best for side sleepers, while the Firm side is just fine for all sleeping positions. We really appreciate that, on the same bed, they created an option specifically for side sleepers (about 65% of the population) and an option for back and stomach sleepers (about 17% of the population, respectively).

If you’re somebody who carries a lot of weight, Layla—like most all-foam beds—isn’t necessarily designed for you. Layla will be best for individuals that weigh under about 230 lb. The general consensus is that if you weigh over 230 lb or 250 lb, you should be looking into a coil bed.

  • People who want a bed that does a wonderful job with regulating temperature
  • People who switch positions a lot in their sleep (great for combo sleepers)
  • Anyone that's open to something new

The Special Purple Mattress Material

According to the Purple website, a pair of engineering brothers decided to put their expertise together to create what they call Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This material can stretch up to fifteen times its size so, as you could imagine, it’s incredibly durable. Not only that, the gel-like feel makes a Purple mattress super soft and supportive at the same time. It was a little difficult to judge the firmness of this mattress because it’s so different, but in the end, we put the Original Purple mattress at a medium. As the guys over at Purple say, it’s “soft where you want it, firm where you need it.”

Some of you may be wondering, what Hyper-Elastic Polymer looks like. Well for starters, it’s purple. (Did you see that coming?) We like to describe it as looking like an ice tray or a three dimensional grid, so imagine rows and rows of open cubes made out of a gel-like material. One of the benefits of this material and design is the great airflow it provides. It’s most likely going to be cooler for you than a Layla because Hyper-Elastic Polymer is naturally cooler than foam.

What Does Hyper-Elastic Polymer Feel Like?

If you’re looking for a material that functions differently than memory foam in just about every single way, you’ve found the right mattress. Purple mattresses are very soft, but they don’t leave any body indentation when you lay down. If you pressed your hand down on it really hard, it would bounce back the moment you took your hand away.

Hyper-Elastic Polymer is super responsive

So if you’re somebody who often changes positions when they sleep, then the polymer material will make it much easier for you than a memory foam mattress would. The material also makes the mattress a good option for side, stomach, back, and combo sleepers.

Purple beds offers ample pressure relief

We mentioned that a Purple mattress lands around a medium on our scale, but this could vary for somebody who is significantly larger. The New Purple mattresses will provide more support for heavy-set folks than Layla because of their coil construction.

For anyone who is 250 lb or more, we would recommend looking into the New Purple models, which have coils in their construction and will provide that extra reinforcement you need. You can check out more information about all of the models in our Purple 2, 3, 4, comparison. They are more expensive, but in the long run it’ll be more beneficial to purchase a mattress that will be more durable and better for your body type.

Final Verdict For This Comparison

If you’re trying to decide between a Layla or a Purple mattress, it ultimately comes down to your preferences.

  • Do you like, or dare we say love memory foam? You should go with a Layla mattress.
  • Do you get uncomfortably hot during the night? Purple might have Layla beat this time.
  • Do you like the idea of a flippable mattress? Layla is sort of like two different mattresses in one.
  • Are you a heavier individual? You might want to lean towards a Purple mattress and depending on your size, maybe take a look at the newer models that Purple has to offer.

We can’t tell you which mattress is better than the other because that’s purely subjective. Some people at the have parents that claim they absolutely love Layla, and our very own Matt Ross is in love with his Purple 4. With either choice, give yourself some time for you to get acclimated to the bed so your body can adjust accordingly. You should rest assured that these mattresses wouldn’t be so popular if they weren’t well received, and you get a risk-free trial period to try them out yourself.

Layla And Purple Company Policies

One great thing about buying a bed-in-a-box mattress is free shipping. You’re already paying good money for a mattress, so it’s nice that you won’t have to spend even more to get it to your home. Layla will come in a box as the name suggests, but Purple goes against the status quo by shipping their Original Purple mattress in a protective covering instead, and then offering white glove delivery for their New Purple 2, 3, 4 mattresses. Whatever casing it comes in, after you lay your mattress down in your desired spot, you’ll want to wait 24-48 hours for it to inflate to its intended size.

Each brand offers a risk-free trial period, but Layla’s gives you 120 nights while Purple will give their customers 100 nights. If you decide you want to return your mattress by the end of your trial, don’t sweat it. Like most bed-in-a-box brands, they’ll let you return the mattress for free. Layla just asks that you to wait at least two weeks before you give it back, so you can give your body a chance to adjust to your mattress.

We usually recommend you start looking for a new mattress when your current one is 8-10 years old. With that being said, Layla will offer you a lifetime warranty on your mattress and Purple will offer 10 years. If you want to keep your mattress longer than 10 years, for whatever your reason, you’ll have that extended period of protection with a Layla mattress.
