Before we begin, let me just first introduce the different Purple models so it’s clear which bed I’m referring to as we move through this comparison.
You might have noticed that in the past we considered Purple to have four different mattresses. That’s still true, but they’ve changed the branding a little. Going forward, the 2, 3, and 4 beds are the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier. The Original is the same, only with a few upgrades.
Before we jump into the comparison, check out this video that loansonline.store team member Owen published on the differences between the four Purple beds, meaning between the Purple Original, Purple Hybrid, and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Sometimes it helps to see things visually before reading.
Just in case you missed it, here are the main differences when comparing the Original Purple vs Hybrid vs Premier:
Applied in Cart
The Original Purple mattress is comprised of three layers and totals 9.25″ thick. Here’s how the construction breaks down.
As you can see above, the bed uses a dense layer of foam for its support structure. This is the primary difference between the Original Purple and the New Purple Hybrid mattresses, which use coils instead.
As a result, we’d recommend heavy people (250+ lb) go with one of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Coils tend to be more supportive and durable for big body types.
Another area worth noting is edge support. Previously, the edge support on the Original Purple mattress was below average. However, in late 2019, the company added dense foam side rails around the perimeter of the bed (just like the New Purple Hybrid models). As a result, the edge support is now much improved compared to the previous version of the mattress. This is a positive change for people who share a smaller size bed (full or queen) with a partner or pet.
In terms of firmness, we think the Original Purple comes in around a medium on the firmness scale. Overall, the bed provides a nice balance between support and pressure relief for petite and average sized sleepers. We also think this model will work for all sleeper types—back, stomach, side, and combo.
Last up, let’s talk about the Original Purple’s biggest advantage, price. If you’re on a tight budget, the Original Purple is going to be your best option. It ranges in price from around $650 for a Twin to $1,400 for a King. Plus, Purple will often throw in a free gift (pillow, sheets, etc.) with each mattress purchase. Check the right hand side of the screen to see what the company is currently offering.

The Purple 2 Hybrid mattress is comprised of four layers and totals 11″ thick. Here’s how the construction breaks down.
Here’s a video explaining the differences between Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier:
As we referenced previously, the New Purple Hybrid models use coils rather than dense foam for their main support structure. This makes the New Purple Hybrid mattress models ideal for heavy body types.
That’s because coils provide what we call bi-directional support. This means the coils not only compress (similar to foam), but also push back against pressure (provide a little resistance). This resistance is what makes coil beds more ideal for handling the weight big folks exert on a mattress.
Now the main thing to remember about the base Purple Hybrid mattress is that it’s the firmest of all the models.
That’s because you basically have a 2″ layer of polymer on top of coils, which again tend to be a little firmer and more supportive than dense foams. As you will find out below, the Purple 3 Premier and Purple 4 Premier use more polymer which adds a little more comfort (softness).
Overall, we think the Purple.2 Hybrid comes in around a medium-firm on the firmness scale. As such, Purple tends to recommend this model for back and stomach sleepers.
In terms of price, the Purple Hybrid 2.0 is quite a bit more expensive than the Original Purple, but less than the Purple Hybrid Premier 3.0 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4.0.

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3.0 mattress, like the Purple Hybrid 2.0, is made up of four layers, but totals 12″ thick instead of 11″. Here’s how the layers breakdown.
You might have already caught this, but the main difference between the base Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3.0 model is the top layer. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3.0 uses an additional inch of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
Since the Purple Hybrid Premier 3.0 has an extra inch of polymer on top, it’s slightly softer than the base Purple Hybrid. Overall, we think the Purple.3 Hybrid Premier comes in around a medium to medium-firm on the firmness scale. The company likes to recommend this model for combo sleepers (i.e. folks who switch between their back, stomach, and side throughout the night).
Lastly, let’s talk price. As you probably guessed, the Purple 3.0 Hybrid Premier lands in between the base Hybrid and Hybrid Premier 4.0 models. Hey, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is not cheap. The more you want, the more it will cost you.

Last up is the Purple 4.0 Hybrid Premier, which is comprised of four layers (shocker) and totals 13″ thick. Here’s how it breaks down.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 4.0 obviously uses the most Hyper-Elastic Polymer of all the models and as a result is the softest bed the company sells. It offers the most immersive experience with the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. As such, if you really enjoy the gel-like feel of Purple beds, this is the model to get.
loansonline.store team member Matt actually sleeps on this bed and absolutely loves it. He says it will be tough for him to switch back to any other mattress, especially traditional innerspring or foam beds.
Given how soft the bed is, Purple recommends the Hybrid Premier 4.0 model for side sleepers.
However, keep in mind, we think all Purple beds are great for all types of sleepers. Case in point number one is Matt, who we referenced above. He’s actually a combo sleeper and finds that the Purple.4 Hybrid Premier is great for all positions.
The only downside with the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.0 is price. It’s an expensive bed, there’s no getting around it.
Congratulations! You made it to end of this comparison. Hopefully, it’s been helpful and we were able to clear up any confusion regarding all the Purple models.
Overall, we are big fans of Purple. We like Hyper-Elastic Polymer and all the benefits it provides. If you’re sick of all the traditional mattresses out there, we highly recommend giving Purple a try. After all, we included them on several of our Best Lists for a reason.
Keep reading for more information about Hyper-Elastic Polymer and Purple beds in general.
Now, a large part of why the company has achieved so much success and why they have differentiated themselves from the competition is because of their Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This material, which Purple uses for the top layers on all their mattress models, is actually patented by the founders of the company.
Just to be clear, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is not a foam material. It actually functions more as a gel or silicone-like material. As you can see below, this polymer material is very flexible, stretchy, and responsive. In fact, Hyper-Elastic Polymer can be stretched 15x its original state and then it will immediately snap back to position. It’s pretty incredible.
It truly is a unique material that helps separate Purple mattresses from pretty much all other beds on the market.
Given all four Purple beds use the same Hyper-Elastic Polymer for their top layer, all the models feel pretty similar.
As we stated above, this polymer acts and feels more like a gel material so as you can imagine, the beds have a gel-like feel to them. As you lay down on the bed, you can feel the polymer below moving, compressing, and shifting.
I have to admit, the feeling is a little odd at first. In fact, the feel is just too weird for some people.
However, we’ve found that after spending a few nights on the mattress, the majority of people end up really enjoying the feel. It’s like trying an exotic type of food for the first time. When you first taste it, you’re not used to it and you think it’s weird, but overall you’re like, “Hey, it’s not so bad.” Then after you try it again, a light goes off and you just can’t get enough of it.
If you don’t want to dive right in, though, Purple does allow you to order small samples of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on their website so you can feel it for yourself before pulling the trigger on an entire mattress.
Before we get into the meat and potatoes of this comparison, let’s just get some housekeeping items out of the way. Specifically, let’s discuss Purple’s company policies.
First, it’s important to note that all Purple mattresses come with free shipping. The Original and base Purple Hybrid mattresses arrive rolled up and compressed in a protective bag, while the Purple Hybrid Premier models come with free white glove delivery. That means an actual person (most likely two) will deliver the mattress and set it up for you. You don’t even have to lift a finger other than maybe getting your delivery crew a glass of water because the New Purple Hybrid Premier beds are heavy and difficult to move. The delivery crew will also haul away your old mattress for free if you so choose.
Once the mattress arrives at your home, Purple gives you a 100-night risk-free trial period. This is what makes buying a mattress online so great. The company is basically giving you more than three months to test the bed and truly decide whether you like it.
If, after 30 nights, you decide you don’t like your Purple Hybrid mattress, no worries, all you have to do is contact customer support and they’ll take care of the rest. First, they’ll arrange for a third party service to come remove the mattress from your home for no additional cost. From there, just provide proof to customer support (usually in the form of a pick-up receipt) that the mattress had indeed been picked up and the company will issue you a full refund.
Purple also backs their mattresses with a 10-year limited warranty. If you want more detail on the warranty, we’d recommend checking it out on the company’s website.
Also, just so you’re aware, all these policies (sans free white glove delivery) are pretty standard for the online mattress industry. Most beds you purchase online will come with free delivery, hassle-free returns, a long trial period, and an extended warranty.
Besides having a gel-like feel, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is also unique in that it’s soft and comfortable, yet it also provides a good amount of support, as well.
Overall, we think all four Purple models are ideal for all types of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself a primary back, stomach, or side sleeper.
The polymer material does a great job of cradling your pressure points (hips and shoulders when you’re on your side) yet you always feel like you’re properly supported in all positions. Purple likes to say its Hyper-Elastic Polymer is “soft where you want it and firm where you need it” and we’d have to agree.
With that said, Purple likes to segment its new models by sleeper type, which we will discuss in more detail below.
Besides feel, Hyper-Elastic Polymer provides other benefits, as well. For example, it aids in temperature regulation. In fact, we included Purple on our list of the Best Mattress For Hot Sleepers primarily due to the tremendous airflow the beds allow for. When it comes down to brass tacks, Purple beds excel here for two primary reasons.
First, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is naturally a temperature-neutral material. In other words, it doesn’t retain and radiate heat the way common foams do. Picture this—first, imagine sleeping on a pile of memory foam. Then imagine sleeping on a pile of gel. Which one do you think will sleep cooler? Easy answer, right? The pile of gel (or Hyper-Elastic Polymer in this case) will most likely sleep much cooler.
Further, the way in which Purple designs the top layer helps, too. The top layer is not just a slab of pure polymer. Instead, Purple designed the Hyper-Elastic Polymer in a grid formation. This creates columns and rows of tiny polymer squares that allows air to move freely near the top of the bed.
As you can see above, you’re basically just sleeping on a bunch of tiny pockets of air. Pretty cool, right? In fact, when you push down on the bed with your hands, you can actually feel the air coming up through your fingers.
All in all, we think Purple beds are excellent options for people that tend to warm up throughout the night.
The last item I’d like to discuss before we get into each model relates to motion isolation. Now if you were paying attention above, you might have noticed how we stated Hyper-Elastic Polymer is very responsive and bouncy. That is true and generally speaking, that’s not a good combination for limiting motion transfer.
However, we were actually pleasantly surprised with how the Purple beds performed in this department. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer actually does a pretty decent job of deadening movement. In other words, despite it’s bouncy nature, we noticed very little motion that was transferred from one side of the bed to the other.
This is a good thing for couples. Beds that deaden movement well will generally translate to you feeling less of your partner’s movements throughout the night. After all, no one wants to be jolted awake every time their partner makes a move.
Now, we’re not saying Purple beds are the best ever at deadening movement, but we think they are good enough to where it won’t be an issue for you and your partner.
