amerisleep vs saatva mattress review and comparison

Amerisleep vs Saatva Mattress

Should you get the memory foam mattress, Amerisleep, or the innerspring mattress, Saatva?

This isn't quite an apples-to-apples comparison since Amerisleep and Saatva make totally different mattresses, but we will endeavor to crown a winner nonetheless. Amerisleep is one of our favorite memory foam mattress brands, while Saatva is one of the biggest names in the hybrid and innerspring mattress category. There are several reasons why you might get one of these beds over the other. Keep reading for more info.

Saatva is quite possibly the Internet's most popular luxury mattress under $2,000. Not only does it look like a million bucks, but it's a comfy and supportive bed to boot.

It doesn’t get any better than this review, but I will warn you that we leave virtually no stone unturned when we compare mattresses. As such, here’s a short list of the primary points that we will be covering today.

  • Type of mattress — Amerisleep is a memory foam bed that ranges from 10″ to 14″ thick, while Saatva is an innerspring mattress with two stacks of coils.
  • Pricing and promotions — Amerisleep frequently advertises coupons for $100-$200, while Saatva isn’t keen on discounting their mattresses.
  • Firmness options — Both brands offer beds in multiple comfort profiles, ranging from soft to firm.
  • Sleeping positions — Whether you’re a side, back, stomach, or combination sleeper, both Amerisleep and Saatva have a workable option for you.
  • Body types — Because Saatva has dual layers of springs, it will be an excellent choice for heavy people—we can’t say the same for Amerisleep.
  • Delivery and return policies — You get free shipping with both brands, but we still want to briefly discuss the respective policies for Amerisleep and Saatva.

For even more details on how these beds compare, keep reading as we have mini reviews for both of them below.

Short Overview Of Saatva And Amerisleep

If you look at the entire online mattress landscape, both brands fit into the luxury tier, albeit in different categories. As an example, brands such as Nectar and Purple have focused on the mass market, while Saatva has intentionally positioned itself has a “grown up” mattress. They don’t compete on price, and they don’t view themselves as equals with most mattress brands—aside from Beautyrest, WinkBeds, etc. The beds feature Euro top covers, organic cotton, and upgraded stitching all in an effort to demonstrate that Saatva means luxury.

Amerisleep has taken a similar stance as Saatva, however, the brand is not opposed to running promotions or comparing themselves to the likes of Puffy, Leesa, etc. Apparently, they realize that everyone is a competitor, and therefore Amerisleep makes a concerted effort to emphasize their proprietary and special features. For example, very few beds have a Celliant cover, and this is something Amerisleep makes sure you know as a consumer. So, just to reiterate, we have two luxury beds here; one is in the spring/coil category, and the other is in the all-foam space, a bit like Loom & Leaf.

Amerisleep

BEST FOR:

  • Folks that like memory foam and want the option to select the soft/firm rating of their bed
  • Any and all sleeping positions (remember, they make soft, medium, and firm beds)
  • If you're curious about the bed's Celliant cover (said to help with restful sleep)
  • Individuals with an average or petite body type
  • If you want a comfortable mattress with a new style of memory foam

Summary Of The Amerisleep Models

Amerisleep offers five different models, each with a different firmness level and price. They actually do a good job of making things easy to understand for consumers as well. For instance, AS1 is their firmest, thinnest, and most affordable bed, while AS5 is their softest, thickest, most expensive bed. I’m sure plenty of people get AS1 and AS5, but AS3 is their most popular model. Here’s a graphic that should shed even more light on the differences between the Amerisleep models.

amerisleep mattress firmness

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, the three models that you should look into are AS1, AS2, and AS3, depending on how firm you want the bed to be. For strict side sleepers, AS5, AS4, and AS3 are the beds you’ll prefer. If you tend to switch sleeping positions frequently, you’ll want a bed that’s not too firm or soft, but that also satiates your dominant sleep style. In other words, for combination sleepers, AS4, AS3, and AS2 are top models with AS3 being our recommendation.

Memory Foam, But It’s Responsive

Perhaps the biggest differentiator for Amerisleep is the responsive nature of the company’s memory foam, which all the beds feature. Traditionally, memory foam had a sink-in, syrup-like feel (think legacy TempurPedic mattresses from early 2000s). With Amerisleep, you get the quintessential pressure relief from the memory foam without the “stuck” feeling, which some people tend to dislike.

In all honesty, Amerisleep offers some of the most comfortable memory foam beds. We were thrilled to experience how pressure relieving, yet responsive their beds are. If you like memory foam, but want something that feels “newer,” Amerisleep is just that.

This is definitely one point of differentiation for Amerisleep—it has a responsive memory foam feel, while Saatva has an innerspring/pillow top feel. This isn’t to say Amerisleep is any better (or worse) than Saatva, but it’ll feel a good deal different.

What About Amerisleep’s Celliant Cover

You might have read about Celliant in one of our other Amerisleep reviews, or in our articles about Bear mattress, but what is Celliant and what is it designed to do? The short story is that Celliant is a textile with certain restorative qualities. In fact, the company that owns/manufactures Celliant claims that it can help with circulation, restful sleep, among many other things.

Here’s a closer look at the special Celliant cover on Amerisleep beds

We should point out that we don’t have conclusive, identifiable data demonstrating the efficacy (or lack thereof) of Cellaint. We have certain team members that think it works, and we have others that believe it’s complete malarkey. Will Celliant work for you? We don’t know, but it could end up being an x-factor that you won’t experience on many other beds. For the record, all five models from Amerisleep have a Celliant cover.

The other thing worth mentioning with Amerisleep’s cover is that it’s both removable and machine washable. As much as we like the organic cotton cover from Saatva, we really appreciate that you can easily remove the Amerisleep cover to deep clean it. This makes Amerisleep a viable mattress for guest rooms, Airbnb, kiddos, and seniors. According to the FAQ section on Amerisleep’s website, you should just wash the cover on a cold, gentle cycle and hang it to air dry.

Free Returns vs White Glove Delivery

With both brands, free shipping is in place. Amerisleep ships their beds in a box, while Saatva uses an upgraded delivery method which takes a few days longer, but gives you a full-size mattress (rather than a rolled up one in a box). Saatva also hires a company to bring the mattress in your house, set it up, and remove your old mattress, all for free. This is helpful if you’re worried about the weight of the mattress, or you just prefer to kick back and let someone else do the work.

You have to contrast Saatva’s white glove delivery with Amerisleep’s policy of offering free returns. With Saatva, while they offer a more premium delivery service, they do incur more costs in the process. As a result, they charge a $99 “transportation fee” if you end up returning the bed. That’s a moderate fee, but a fee nonetheless.

Saatva

BEST FOR:

  • Pretty much anyone (it's a supportive bed that comes in various firmness levels)
  • Individuals that want a luxury mattress that costs just above $1,000
  • If you want a pillow top mattress with an organic cotton cover
  • Side, stomach, and back sleepers (even if you rotate positions)

Summary Of Prices For Both Brands

Price is important, but it’s not the only thing. Both of these brands offer luxury mattresses that cost more than the average bed online. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the prices for these respective beds, in the queen size.

  • Saatva — $1,099
  • Amerisleep AS3 — $1,399

Keep in mind that Saatva is $1,099 for the 11.5″ and 14.5″ beds, while Amerisleep AS1 is less than AS3 and AS5 is more than AS3. Now, this is just a look at what the brands list as the MSRP. Amerisleep will typically knock off something like $200, such that the AS3 queen size mattress ends up being about $1,200.

Because they see themselves in another league, Saatva really does not like to offer discounts. And if you think about it, Saatva’s strategy makes sense. They offer a bed at a fair price—no coupon necessary. That said, you can check Saatva’s website for their current offers just on the off chance that they are running some sort of sale—highly unlikely.

We should also acknowledge just how good of a value Saatva is. You’re getting a high end mattress with two layers of coils and an organic cotton cover for under $1,500. That’s pretty crazy to think about.

Saatva Has Three Comfort Profiles

Much like Amerisleep, Saatva offers multiple firmness options, albeit at different points on the softness/firmness scale. They have a “Plush Soft” model that’s somewhere near a medium firmness—this is our favorite. They also have a “Luxury Firm” model that’s fairly firm, and the most popular Saatva mattress. Finally, they offer a “Firm” model which is extra-firm and will only work for back and stomach sleepers.

saatva mattress review firmness rating for this bed

As the graphic above shows, Saatva leans toward the firmer end of the spectrum, though, the “Plush Soft” should be very nice for side sleepers (and other positions as well). We consider the “Plush Soft” bed to at a similar firmness level to Amerisleep AS3 (though they will feel nothing alike).

As a point of clarification, Saatva makes their beds in an 11.5″ and 14.5″ height profile. Regardless of which height you choose, the price will be the same, as will the feel. The difference is mostly aesthetic, and should have no bearing on the mattress in practical terms (aside from the fact that the 14.5″ bed is harder to find sheets for).

Innerspring Support With A Pillow Top

If you look at the construction of Saatva, it’s nothing like Amerisleep. Saatva starts with a base of innersprings and then has another layer of coils, memory foam, and a Euro top cover. The support level of Saatva is through the moon, making it a fantastic mattress for heavy and obese people. Here’s a look at the “guts” of the Saatva mattress.

Saatva offers dual coil layers and a big pillow top

As you’d expect, with two layers of coils, Saatva is a bouncy mattress. This is the type of bed kids dream about—you could jump on it for hours. And this is the reason that we typically say that Saatva has an innerspring feel. It also, however, has a pillow-top feel since the main comfort layer of the bed in a Euro top cover made in part of organic cotton.

You can see Saatva’s organic cotton Euro top cover

In short, we love the Euro top cover, and we think plenty of people will as well. The “Plush Soft” model will offer a softer feel, a bit like a gigantic pillow with springs underneath. You get pressure relief without compromising in the support department.

So Which Should You Choose?

The answer is up to you, but the meat and potatoes of what you should think about are listed below.

  • Do you prefer a memory foam feel or an innerspring/pillow top one? The former is Amerisleep, and the latter, Saatva.
  • Do you consider your body type to be small, medium, or large/heavy? If you answered “large/heavy,” Saatva is your winner. Amerisleep is plenty fine for medium and petite body types.
  • Is Amerisleep’s Celliant something you’re interested in, or would you prefer Saatva’s organic cotton cover?
  • Is the ability to deep clean a mattress important to you? If so, Amerisleep offer the machine washable cover.
  • Are you finicky? If so, you might want to start with Amerisleep since the company offers free returns.

Hopefully this post was helpful for you. If you need any more information about Saatva or Amerisleep, we have posted plenty of other articles you can find throughout our website. Thanks for stopping by The loansonline.store.
